Standard one-way prices without an account, checked July 2026 against Dart Charge on gov.uk, m6toll.co.uk, humberbridge.co.uk, tt2.co.uk and merseyflow.co.uk. Vehicle classes differ by operator: on the M6 Toll a van over 1.3m tall pays Class 4, at Dartford a van is Class C, and the Tyne Tunnel charges every vehicle over 3.5t the same £5.20. How UK toll roads and crossings actually work
The UK has far fewer toll roads than most of Europe, but the handful it does have sit on routes freight cannot easily avoid: the Dartford Crossing carries the M25 over the Thames, the Tyne Tunnel links the A19 under the Tyne, the Mersey Gateway carries the main route between Runcorn and Widnes, the Humber Bridge connects Hull with northern Lincolnshire, and the M6 Toll bypasses the most congested stretch of motorway in the West Midlands. Four of the five run barrier-free: cameras read your plate and you either hold an account or pay online within a deadline. The M6 Toll is the exception, cashless but still collected at toll plazas, where non-account drivers pay by card in the lane and account holders get automatic barrier opening.
That free-flow model is where operators get caught out. Miss the payment window, which is midnight the day after crossing at Dartford, the Tyne Tunnel, the Humber Bridge and the Mersey crossings, and a toll of a few pounds becomes a penalty of £25 to £105 per vehicle, per crossing. A fleet running five vehicles a day through Dartford that lets payments lapse for a week is looking at four figures in penalties before anyone notices. The fix is the same everywhere: open the operator's account, register every plate in the fleet, and let it auto-pay. The discounts (10% at the Tyne Tunnel, up to 20% at Dartford, and single-zone M6 Toll trips cut by up to half with Breeze) are the bonus; the real value is never receiving a penalty notice again.
One crossing many drivers still search for no longer charges at all: the Severn bridges between England and Wales scrapped their tolls on 17 December 2018, so the M4 and M48 crossings are free in both directions. Checked July 2026.
What tolls add to a route, in real money
Tolls are a per-trip cost, so they hit high-frequency work hardest. A 44 tonne artic doing a daily return through the Dartford Crossing on a pre-pay account pays £14.40 a day, which is £3,456 over 48 five-day weeks. The same pattern through the Tyne Tunnel costs about £2,246 a year with an account. On a full-length M6 Toll run the standard Class 5 price of £20.90 each way adds £41.80 to a return trip, which is why many hauliers still route through Birmingham on the free M6 and accept the congestion risk; with a Breeze account the same return drops to £36.40.

Account schemes compared
Every tolled crossing in this calculator runs a discount or account scheme, and they differ enough to matter:
- Dart Charge pre-pay: top-up account, cars £2.80 instead of £3.50, multi-axle HGVs £7.20 instead of £8.40. One account covers a whole fleet.
- M6 Toll Breeze: single-zone HGV trips drop to £9.00 against £14.50 to £15.70 standard, and a single-zone car pays £4.00 instead of £6.90.
- Humber Bridge account: holds prices at the pre-2026 level (£1.50 car, £4.00 mid band, £12.00 HGV) while guests pay the new higher tolls.
- Tyne Tunnel pre-paid: flat 10% off every passage and no deadline to remember.
- Merseyflow sticker: £5 one-off fee, then the lowest rate per class; Halton residents can register for unlimited personal crossings for £12 a year (£10 with auto-renewal).

Frequently asked questions
Which UK roads and crossings charge a toll?
The main ones for commercial traffic are the Dartford Crossing, the M6 Toll, the Humber Bridge, the Tyne Tunnel and the Mersey Gateway and Silver Jubilee bridges. There are also small local crossings such as the Itchen Bridge in Southampton and a few private bridges. London's charges (congestion charge, ULEZ) are emissions and demand charges rather than tolls; our ULEZ and Clean Air Zone checker covers those.
Are the Severn bridges still tolled?
No. Tolls on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and the M48 Severn Bridge were abolished on 17 December 2018, and both are free in both directions.
Do motorcycles pay UK tolls?
Motorcycles cross free at Dartford, the Humber Bridge, the Tyne Tunnel and the Mersey crossings. The M6 Toll does charge motorcycles: £5.90 for the full length at the standard rate, checked July 2026.
Why does my van pay more than a car at some crossings?
Each operator draws its class lines differently. At Dartford any two-axle goods vehicle is Class C (£4.20). On the M6 Toll the trigger is height: anything over 1.3m at the front axle with two axles pays Class 4 (£20.20 full length). At the Humber Bridge, Tyne Tunnel and Mersey crossings a van under 3.5t pays the same as a car. Check the class rules on each crossing's page before you assume.
Can I reclaim VAT on tolls?
M6 Toll prices are shown inclusive of VAT and the operator issues VAT receipts, so VAT-registered businesses can recover it. The statutory river crossings (Dartford, Humber, Tyne, Mersey) levy charges that are outside the scope of VAT, so there is nothing to reclaim; the cost is simply an allowable business expense. When in doubt ask your accountant, since vehicle and scheme specifics matter.
What happens if I just do not pay?
Every free-flow crossing photographs your plate. Expect a penalty notice to the registered keeper: £70 at Dartford (halved to £35 if paid in 14 days, £105 if ignored), £30 rising to £100 plus the toll at the Tyne Tunnel, £50 at the Mersey crossings and a £25 admin fee at the Humber Bridge. Persistent non-payment goes to debt recovery and can end in court.
