Methodology and assumptions

The scorecard converts each quote into four component scores out of 100, then blends them using your weights (normalised to sum to 100%). Figures are illustrative of your own inputs; there are no external data sources. Method as of July 2026:

  • Price: the lowest quote scores 100, and every other quote scores in proportion (lowest price divided by that quote's price). A quote twice the cheapest scores 50.
  • Service (transit time): the fastest lead time scores 100, others scale by fastest days divided by their days.
  • Fleet capability: your 1 to 5 suitability rating, scaled to 100 (5 = 100).
  • Accreditations: the share of the four listed accreditations held (FORS, BRCGS or food-safe, ISO 9001, temperature-controlled capability), scaled to 100.
  • Weighted total: the sum of each component multiplied by its normalised weight. The highest total is ranked first and highlighted.

Price scoring assumes the quotes share a comparable basis. Where the price basis differs (per load, per pallet, per week), the tool flags it, because a per-pallet and a per-load figure are not directly comparable without your volume assumptions. Capability and accreditation inputs are yours to judge; the tool does not verify them. For that, a formal procurement process is the right route.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare haulage quotes fairly?

Put every quote on the same basis first: the same lanes, volumes, service window and price unit. Then weight the things that actually cost you money if they go wrong, usually reliability and capability, not just the rate. This tool does that weighting for you and ranks the result.

Why does the cheapest quote not always win?

Because the rate is only part of total cost. A cheaper operator that misses delivery windows, damages stock, or lacks the right accreditation can cost far more in failed deliveries, penalties and lost customers than the few pounds saved per load. The scorecard lets price compete against service and capability rather than deciding on its own.

What accreditations should a haulier hold?

It depends on your goods. FORS shows fleet safety and compliance maturity. BRCGS or an equivalent food-safety standard matters for food and drink. ISO 9001 signals a managed quality system. Temperature-controlled capability is essential for chilled or frozen freight. Match the accreditation to your risk, not to a longer list.

Can I change the weightings?

Yes. The defaults (price 40%, service 25%, capability 20%, accreditations 15%) suit a typical general-haulage buyer, but if you run time-critical or temperature-controlled freight you should raise service or capability. The scores update when you press Score and rank.

Can I save or print the comparison?

Yes. Use the Print or save summary button on the results to produce a clean, printable scorecard for your tender file or to share internally. It uses your browser's print dialogue, so you can save to PDF.

Note on total cost: the lowest price rarely wins on total cost of ownership once failed deliveries, damage, tail-lift or accreditation gaps are counted. This scorecard is a decision aid, not a substitute for reference checks, a site visit and a proper contract. Verify every claim before you award work.

Scored the quotes you have. Now get the ones worth comparing.

A scorecard is only as good as the shortlist behind it. Rather than chasing quotes one by one, brief CTS once on what you need moving. We place your requirement before vetted UK operators with the licence, fleet and accreditations to deliver, and you compare them on the metrics above. Free and no obligation.
