How the M6 Toll works
The M6 Toll is Britain's only tolled motorway: 27 miles between Coleshill in the south and Cannock in the north, built to bypass the notoriously congested M6 through central Birmingham. The road is split into three pricing zones, and you pay by how many zones you pass through, so a short hop from Burntwood to Weeford costs less than the full run. Payment is cashless but the toll plazas remain: non-account drivers pay by debit or credit card, contactless phone payment or fuel card at the payment point in the lane, while Breeze account and tag holders are recognised automatically and the barrier lifts without stopping.
Vehicle class is set by physical measurement, not weight. Anything with two axles that stands over 1.3 metres tall at the front axle is Class 4, which catches every panel van, Luton and 7.5t rigid as well as 18t two-axle trucks. Add a third axle at that height and you are Class 5 with coaches and artics. This is the class system that surprises van drivers who expect car pricing: a Transit pays £20.20 for the full length at the standard rate, not £12.00. Prices are reviewed quarterly by the operator, Midland Expressway Ltd, and shown VAT-inclusive; VAT-registered businesses can recover the VAT with a receipt from the operator. Is the M6 Toll worth it for freight?
The honest answer is that it depends on the time of day and what an hour is worth to the load. The toll saves the Birmingham box: on a clear day the free M6 costs little extra time and £20.90 per Class 5 pass is hard to justify; in the peak, when the M6 between J4 and J11 congests, the toll road is routinely the difference between hitting a booking slot and missing it. Operators who run it daily tend to split the difference: Breeze account, toll northbound in the morning peak, free M6 back off-peak. At £18.20 per full-length Breeze pass, ten passes a week is £8,736 over 48 weeks, which is why the decision belongs in the rate, not in the driver's judgement on the day.
