How the Tyne Tunnel toll works
The Tyne Tunnels carry the A19 under the river between Jarrow on the south bank and Howdon on the north, the main freight artery serving the Port of Tyne, the North East's industrial estates and everything on the A19 corridor that avoids central Newcastle. Since 2021 the crossing has been open-road tolling: no barriers, no booths, cameras read your plate and you pay afterwards. The operator is TT2 Limited, and the prices and rules on this page were checked in July 2026 against the official tt2.co.uk toll pages.
Classing is simple compared with other UK crossings: motorbikes go free, anything under 3.5 tonnes pays the light rate of £2.60, and anything over 3.5 tonnes pays double, £5.20, regardless of axles or length. Those figures took effect on 1 May 2026. A pre-paid account takes a flat 10% off every passage, so £2.34 and £4.68, and removes the payment deadline entirely, which for fleets matters more than the discount.
Paying, and the escalating penalty ladder
Without an account you must pay by midnight the day after you use the tunnel: online, through the app, on the automated phone line, or in cash or card at a PayPoint retailer. Miss that and TT2 issues an Unpaid Toll Charge Notice to the registered keeper, and the amounts climb on a fixed ladder:
- UTCN issued: £30 charge plus the toll.
- Still unpaid after 14 days: reminder at £60 plus the toll.
- A further 14 days: final notice at £100 plus the toll.
- After that: a collection agency adds up to £79 on top of the £100 and the toll.
So one forgotten £5.20 HGV passage can end at £184.20. The ladder resets nothing for fleets: every unpaid passage climbs it separately. Register every plate on a pre-paid account and the whole mechanism disappears. Figures checked July 2026.
HGV notes
- Flat £5.20 (£4.68 pre-paid) for every goods vehicle over 3.5t makes the Tyne one of the cheapest HGV crossings in the country per passage; a daily return is £9.36 on account, about £2,246 over 48 five-day weeks.
- The toll applies both directions, around the clock. There is no free overnight window, unlike Dartford.
- Dangerous goods vehicles must use the escorted convoy arrangements the tunnel publishes rather than free-flow through with everyone else; check TT2 guidance before routing ADR loads.
- The toll is a statutory charge with no VAT to reclaim. Cost it as a line item in the haulage cost calculator.
