The new Humber Bridge Toll system
The Humber Bridge links Hessle on the East Yorkshire bank with Barton-upon-Humber in northern Lincolnshire, and for anyone moving goods between Hull and the south bank ports and industry it saves a detour of about 50 miles round via Goole. On 2 February 2026 the bridge switched on a new free-flow tolling system: the booths are gone, ANPR cameras read plates at motorway speed, and payment happens afterwards, online, through the app, by phone or at a PayPoint. At the same time tolls rose for the first time since 2012, from £1.50 to £2.00 for a car, with the old prices preserved for account holders. Figures on this page were checked in July 2026 against the Humber Bridge Board's site, humberbridge.co.uk.
The account is the obvious move for any regular user. It is the difference between £2.00 and £1.50 per car crossing, £5.00 and £4.00 in the middle band, and £15.00 against £12.00 for heavy goods, a straight 20 to 25% saving that also removes the payment deadline from your day. An HGV doing a daily return over the bridge saves £6.00 a day on the account price, roughly £1,440 across 48 five-day weeks.
Paying: the deadline that matters
Without an account, you must pay by midnight the day after you cross, whatever time you crossed. Miss it and an Unpaid Toll Notification follows with a £25 administration fee added per crossing, which turns a £2.00 car toll into £27.00. Guest payment works online at the bridge's site, on the app, by phone, or in cash or card at any PayPoint shop. Account holders do nothing: crossings are matched to the plate and taken from the balance automatically. Checked July 2026.
Vehicle bands and HGV specifics
- Motorcycles cross free at all times.
- Cars, and vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, pay the £2.00 band (£1.50 with an account). That includes ordinary vans and car-derived vans.
- Goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes and up to 7.5 tonnes, along with minibuses and similar mid-weight vehicles, pay £5.00 (£4.00 account). A 7.5t rigid sits at the top of this band.
- Goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, which in practice means 18t and 26t rigids and every artic, pay £15.00 (£12.00 account), the highest standard toll of the estuary crossings in this cluster.
- Abnormal loads over 44 tonnes or 3.05m wide pay an additional charge and must follow the bridge's notification process before crossing. High-sided vehicles should watch the bridge's wind restrictions, which can close the bridge to them in strong westerlies.
The toll is a statutory charge with no VAT element to reclaim; cost it as a straight expense line in the haulage cost calculator.

Yes. The toll applies per crossing, each way, at all hours. There is no free overnight window on the Humber Bridge, unlike the Dartford Crossing.
